Note: 1000 Chinese words are a lot to learn. As a beginner you'll probably need more than one year to learn them as you simultaneously attend classes of Chinese (recommended!).
To read a Chinese newspaper, you need to know aprox. 2000 to 3000 Chinese words (depending on the type of text).

Question: "How many different characters are used in Chinese?"

Answer:
Nowadays, a typical child will learn aboud 3000 chinese characters in his/her first 6 years of school, which is normally enough for reading books and newspapers. Educated Chinese native speakers know aproximately. 6000 characters. The Hanyu Da Cidian (in Chinese: Hànyǔ dà cídiǎn / 漢語大詞典 / 汉语大词典) ‚ "Big Chinese Dictionary ") from the year 1990 contains about 50 000 characters, while modern dictionaries for everyday's use contain about 6000 - 10000 characters.

Question: "Once having learned all 1000 words of the Han Trainer Top 1000 Edition, how many percent of everyday's Chinese words will I master?"

Answer:
After learning the 500 most common characters, you will understand about 75% of an average text. However:

This is why the Han Trainer Top 1000 Edition doesn't teach you the 1000 most commonly used Chinese characters (since most of them are not standalone words), but the 1000 most commonly used Chinese words (which can consist of 1, 2 or more characters)

 

Question: "Am I likely to encounter one of the 500 most common chinese characters as a part of one (or seeral) of the most common composed words?"

Answer:
Yes. Many of the most common Chinese characters are so common because they appear in many frequently used composed words.

 

Question: "I read that there are different nubers and statistics about which Chinese character is used how often. How can that be?"

Answer:
Based upon the the selection of texts which were analyzed (i.e. in which the words were counted), these numbers and statistics can vary. It is also important which time period those texts come from: An analysis which is created today and based upon recent bookms, newspaper artricles etc.), a word such as "Internet" will certainly come up more often than in an analysis which was done 20 years ago.
